Title: Arnold mansion postcards
Description: Depicts the front facade from the garden and a detailed view of the pediment over the front doorway. Includes interior views of the right and left sides of the entrance hall, the great chamber, the parlor, and a bedroom., Contains 1 postcard printed in color and 9 printed in black and white., Mount Pleasant Mansion was built 1761-1765 for Captain John Macpherson after the designs of Thomas Nevil in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, Pa. Macpherson, a privateer during the Seven Years’ War, purchased the estate with profits from these operations. Free white and Black laborers, indentured servants, and at least four enslaved people of African descent, whose names are unknown, worked on the plantation. In 1779, General Benedict Arnold purchased Mount Pleasant for his wife Peggy Shippen, but they never occupied the house. In 1792, General Jonathan Williams purchased the mansion. The City of Philadelphia purchased the property from the Williams family in 1869. On behalf of the city, the Philadelphia Museum of Art restored the house in 1926., Purchase 1984. Description: Contains images of the University of Pennsylvania's West Philadelphia campus, mostly depicting College Hall from various angles, built 1870-1872 after designs by Thomas Webb Richards., Contains 9 postcards printed in color and 8 printed in black and white., Founded as a charity school in 1740 by Benjamin Franklin. Original school buildings located at 4th and Arch Streets, then moved into the Presidential Mansion at 9th and Chestnut Streets in 1802. The mansion was cleared away in 1829 and two larger university buildings were constructed. Expanded to a much larger West Philadelphia campus in 1875., Digitized with funding from a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (PW-506-19-10), 2010-2012.

Description: Collection of graphic materials documenting world's fairs of the latter 19th and early 20th centuries, predominantly the Centennial Exhibition of 1876 (Philadelphia) and Exposition Universelle de 1867 à Paris. Includes stereographs, trade cards, collecting cards, lantern slides, and souvenirs. Graphics also depict the Great Exhibition of 1851; New York Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations (1853-1854); the Exposition Universelle de 1867 a Paris; the Paris Universal Exposition of 1878; the Chicago World's Fair of 1893; the Pan American Exposition of 1901 (Buffalo, N.Y.); the Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904 (St. Louis, Mo.); and the Sesqui-Centennial International Exposition of 1926 (Philadelphia). Views show panoramas of the exhibition grounds and exteriors and interiors of exhibition buildings, including displays showing the wares and products of specific companies and countries, particularly porcelain and terra cotta; art, predominantly sculpture; and dioramas representing the social life and customs of different nations (Morocco, Japan, Sweden, and South America). Several trade cards issued during the Chicago World's Fair advertising the Enterprise Manufacturing Company of Penn'a. also contain anecdotal, caricatured scenes portraying prominent historical figures, including Abraham Lincoln, Horace Greeley, and Benjamin Franklin.
