Description
Plan of the first Philadelphia Gas Works, expanded in 1850 after the designs of Cresson, the second chief engineer of the gas works, near the Schuylkill River on the 2200-2300 blocks of Market Street. Diagrams the coal stores, retort house, lime and coke sheds, lime kilns and house, purifying houses, gasholders, and railroad tracks. Includes a "References" key to coded symbols of buildings, including valve houses and meters. Works originally completed in 1834 after the designs of engineer Samuel V. Description
Floor plan of the Protestant Episcopal church built 1856-1859 after the designs of John Notman at 200 South 19th Street. Includes the chancel; vestibules; towers; the center, South, and North galleries of pews; and a porch. Pews are printed with a row number, "value," "seats," and "rent." Values range from $1200 to $200 and pews 146 and 147 are annotated in ink: "3 for rent" and "1 for rent." In March 1859, an auction administered by M. Thomas & Sons was arranged by the vestry to raise funds to complete the construction of the church, particularly a steeple. Description
Depicts three rows of elevations showing the basic architectural stylings of the twenty-three distinct Granite Street properties constructed by John Rice for Jesse Godley between 1849 and 1853. The first two rows show the front elevations of the north and south sides of Granite Street extending from Front to Dock Streets (100-127 Granite Street). The third row shows the east and west side elevations of Granite Street, including the underground storage vaults below the street and the front elevations of properties facing Front, Dock and Walnut Streets (200 block of South Front Street; 137-143 Dock Street; 100 block of Walnut Street). The plans include pre-consolidation property numbers; notes about properties that extend, and are accessible, from both Granite Street and Front, Walnut and Dock Streets; and pedestrian traffic, including laborers rolling barrels on the sidewalk, horse-drawn carts, and men and women walking on the sidewalks. Godley financed the "Granite Street Improvements" in anticipation of an increase in trade that the Central Railroad would bring to the area. Builders include John Rice, stone masons Lukens & Hutchinson, brick workers George R. Creely, and granite workers S.K. Hoxie, John C. Leiper, and William Keys. The innovative granite-covered storage vaults, twenty-four feet wide by three-hundred twenty-five feet long, were built under the street with a brick-arch arcade and for the joint use of tenants.
