- Contains eight, titled vignettes with varying Kollner imprints depicting "Girard College," "State House," "Fairmount," and "Exchange," i.e., the Merchant's Exchange. The Girard College, State House, and Merchant Exchange views are repeated. Girard College vignette shows Founder’s Hall and the eastern and western outbuildings built 1833-1847 after the designs of Thomas Ustick Walter. State House vignette shows Independence Hall, built 1732-1748 after the designs of Andrew Hamilton and Edmund Woolley at 520 Chestnut Street. Also shows City Hall built 1790-1791 after the designs of David Evans, Jr. (500 Chestnut) and Congress Hall built 1787-1789 (540-558 Chestnut). Fairmount vignette shows the Fairmount Waterworks and the Wire Bridge at Fairmount. The waterworks were originally built 1812-1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Frederick Graff and the bridge was built 1841-1842 after the designs of engineer Charles Ellet, Jr. Exchange vignette shows the exchange building constructed 1832-33 for the Philadelphia Exchange Company after the designs of William Strickland at 143 South Third Street. - Unfinished proof showing an interior view of the Baptist church during a baptism. Parishioners fill the pews and balconies. The men, women, and children look toward a small group of individuals as they stand in front of the pulpit before they proceed to the baptismal well in the center of the church. Many of the women wear ornate bonnets. Incomplete depictions include the well and parishioners. - Description
- Proof for an advertisement showing the two-and-a-half story warehouse with numerous windows at the northeast corner of Eight and Zane streets. Patrons enter the entrances, including one adorned with signage, of the building. Sign advertises "Beds Hair Mattresses Cushions Feathers Moss Ticking Cotts Cattail." Bedding and bed posts are visible in or hang out of most of the warehouse windows. A stuffed swan standing among pillows is also visible in one of the lower windows. Bags of "Feathers" and bed posts lean against the building and mattresses and bed cushions are displayed on racks on the sidewalk. View also includes a fire hydrant and a boy walking past the warehouse. Frederick Fisher operated an upholstery business 1839-1853 and from the Eighth and Zane location 1844-1848., Title supplied by Wainwright., Wainwright suggests date of circa 1845., Date from Poulson inscription on recto: August 1846. - Description
- View predominately shows the businesses (with pre-consolidation addresses) on the 600 block of Chestnut Street. Includes a three-quarter view of William S. Mariten, publisher & bookseller (144, i.e., 608) in addition to full views of the American Sunday School Union tenanted by Howell, Finn & Co. Paper Hangings (146, i.e., 610); the Jones Hotel (148-152, i.e., 616-620); and the William Waln residence, partially obscured by trees, at the corner of 7th and Chestnut streets. A man stands in the doorway of the wallpaper store as nearby a man reads the posted, encased bulletins of the American Sunday School Union. A woman enters the ASSU building that also bears a “Penna. Bible Society” sign. Pedestrians walk on the sidewalk and a man greets a woman in front of one of the entrances of the hotel at which carriages and a wagon are parked. On the block and at the distant intersection a man rides horseback and a horse-drawn carriage, wagon, and omnibus travel. Also shows blocks of buildings above Seventh Street as part of the vista. William S. Martien printed as an individual in Philadelphia between 1835 and 1854. American Sunday School Union tenanted 146 Chestnut Street 1827-1853.
