- Description
- Collection of billheads, dated between 1880 and 1898, containing decorative and ornate lettering, ornamented type, vignette illustrations, and pictorial details. Illustrations depict exteriors of storefronts and factories (some adorned in signage); pharmaceutical apparatus and goods, including "patent shaving mug," mortar and pestles, scales, and rates, barrels, and jugs of medicinals; and scenes of a harbor view, a druggist in his pharmacy, and a blacksmith at work on his anvil. Some of the exterior views include patrons entering buildings, street and pedestrian traffic, as well as laborers at work. Pictorial details include trademarks, art nouveau imagery, an incense burner, truss, sun bursts, scrolls, medallions and shields, flowers, frames, flourishes, and filigree., Firms represented include Edward C. Illustrations depict exteriors of storefronts and factories (some adorned in signage); mortars and pestles, including a trademark with an eagle perched on the tool; and an allegorical scene juxtaposing a mule caravan in tropical setting with a "Quinine Chemical Works." Pictorial details include floral and cloud imagery, frames, and flourishes. - Description
- Includes a prescription sheet used as stationery, a memorandum, and billhead containing type and ornate lettering and pictorial details. Details depict trademarks designed as coats of arms. Trademarks include animal figures, the neck of a flask, and the date of establishment: 1780. Caswell, Maswell & Co., established in 1752 by Dr. William Hunter of Newport, R.I., was assumed by his apprentice Charles Feke in 1780. The business originally an apothecary shop, started to specialize in personal care and hygiene products in the 1780s, and was reorganized as Caswell, Massey & Co. in 1876., Title supplied by cataloger., P.2011.46.30 completed in manuscript on December 19, 1883 to Mr. J.
