- Racist trade card promoting Dannemiller Coffee Company and depicting a genre scene with an African American boy jockey, white children, and a horse. In the left, the jockey, attired in riding boots; white breeches; a white shirt and red vest; and a red and white jockey cap, stands beside a brown horse onto which he helps a white boy mount. He holds the bridle in his left hand and leans down to help the boy place his foot into the stirrup with his right hand. In the center, the white boy, attired in a Fauntleroy outfit with black boots and hat, grips the saddle to hoist himself up onto the horse. In the right, a smiling white girl with long, brown hair looks at the viewer. She descends a set of stairs holding the railing. She is attired in black shoes, a yellow dress with blue trim, stockings, and a bow in her hair. She carries a doll costumed in a red and white dress with matching red shoes and hat. A greyhound faces the girl at the base of the stairs. Edward Dannemiller (1850-1939) and his son Albert J. Dannemiller (1879-1955) founded Dannemiller Coffee Company in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1904. - Trade card issued during the world's fair held in Buffalo, N.Y., May 1-November 2, 1901. Depicts a rosey-cheeked boy attired in a sailor suit holding different varieties of boxes of Heide's candies. He stands in front of an open crate of the confections. - Trade card issued for the world's fair held in Buffalo, N.Y., May 1-November 2, 1901 depicting the Ethnology Building built after the designs of George Cary. Shows fair visitors entering the classical-style building adorned with Renaissance decorative treatment, which housed ethnographic and archaeological exhibits of the Niagara area. Lewis Gibb and John Bucher formed Bucher & Gibbs in 1870., Copyrighted by the Pan-American Exposition Co., Illustrated advertisement for "The Butcher & Gibbs Plow Co., Canton, Ohio. U.S.A." printed on verso. - Racist trade card promoting Knox Gelatine and depicting an African American woman domestic making a gelatin molded dessert with a white girl. Shows an African American woman domestic attired in a head kerchief, spectacles, a patterned shawl, and a white, long-sleeved shirt, sitting in a kitchen behind a table. She teaches the white girl, attired in a hair bow and a striped dress with a ruffled collar, how to decorate a molded gelatin dessert and places a berry on top it. The girl has a bowl of berries in front of her and holds a spoon with a berry on it. On the table there is a mold, a glass, a lid, a knife, a pitcher, and a box labeled, “Knox’s Gelatine.” In the background is a brick hearth with pots and an oven in the right. Charles B. Knox (1855-1908) of Johnstown, New York discovered a method of granulating gelatine in 1889, which made it practical and easy to use. Charles died in 1908, and his wife Rose Knox ran the company for the next forty years. - Series of six captioned (in French) trade cards containing scenes from Harriet Beecher Stowe’s "Uncle Tom’s Cabin" to promote Liebig Extract of Meat. Cards depict scenes from chapters 4, 7, 12, 14, 17, and 41. Translated captions include: Aunt Chloe preparing corn cakes; Crossing the Ohio on floating ice, Elisa[sic] escapes from Haley; The fight against slave traders; The slave market; On the verge of drowning, Eva is saved by Tom; and the death of Tom. Scenes show enslaved African American woman “Aunt Chloe” at her brick stove, surrounded by three enslaved African American boys as the white adolescent son of her owner, George Shelby, teaches enslaved African American man and her husband "Uncle Tom" to write; enslaved African American woman Eliza Harris escaping white slave trader Mr. Haley with her son Harry in her arms as she runs across patches of ice on the Ohio River; Eliza Harris’s multi-racial husband George Harris shooting white mercenary Tom Loker in a chasm after departing his and his family’s shelter within a Quaker settlement and for Canada; the market of enslaved people attended by Haley following Eliza’s escape where a young enslaved African American boy stands for sale near a white man mercenary and an enslaved African American woman who reaches out for him; Tom swimming toward the flailing, young white girl Eva St. Clare, i.e. Little Eva, in the water near a dock and a steamboat lined with spectators watching the event; and an adult George Shelby visiting with a dying Tom who rests against a bundle amongst crates and straw within a shed after being beaten at the request of his white enslaver Simon Legree., Most of the African American figures are not caricatured in features or attire. Eliza and George Harris figures are depicted with fair complexions. Also depicts Tom as unbeaten in his "deathbed" scene. Von Liebig, a German-born chemist, who developed a manufacturing process for meat extract in 1840, established the Liebig Extract of Meat Company in 1865. - Illustrated business card depicting tiny embossed orange vignettes of an owl, lion, bird and instruments within an oval formed by a single orange line. Rau served as the official photographer for the Pennsylvania Railroad beginning in 1891 and the Lehigh Valley Railroad in 1895. Rau, a professional Philadelphia photographer, began his career as assistant to Philadelphia photographer William Bell; served as the primary photographer of E.L. Wilson's Middle East photographic expedition (1881-1882); and was sole proprietor of a prolific photographic studio that issued lantern slides, stereographs, and photographs between 1887 and 1920. - Illustrated metamorphic trade card for the Indianapolis Brewing Co. When folded, a gentleman attired in a suit, top hat, and cane expresses surprise upon viewing what appears to be a nude woman embracing a man. When opened, the trade card reveals that she is attired in a flesh-colored dress and stands on a veranda enjoying a beer with her male companion. Also shows two bottles of "Duesseldorfer" on the the table, a box of beer on the floor, and a servant delivering a silver platter to the couple. Includes a vignette of the company's brewing complex and trademark on verso. The consolidation of the C.F. Schmidt, P. Lieber, and C.
