Description
Image depicts a scene from the 1811 insurrection of slaves in the Louisiana parish of St. John the Baptist, thirty-six miles north of New Orleans. According to Thompson's history, approximately 500 slaves formed a procession, complete with flags and drums, and set out for New Orleans. Along the way, they destroyed plantations and encouraged other slaves to join them. After news spread to Baton Rouge and Fort St. Charles, the marchers were met by a garrison. Many of the them were killed instantly; others were tried and later executed.
