Description |
Shows the former school building of the Friends' Academy, erected in 1744, rebuilt in 1803, and razed in 1859, boarded up
for demolition on the 100 block of South 4th Street. Building adorned with signage promoting a "stationery & printing" shop.
Also shows adjacent businesses G. Krouse, gas fitter (117 S. 4th); Quaker City Bag Factory; and Moses Thomas & Sons, auctioneers
(139-141 S. 4th). Friends' Academy, established in 1689 by the Religious Society of Friends, suspended operations in 1842
and was re-established as the William Penn Charter School in 1875.

Manuscript note by collector on mount: On the 9th of April '59 workmen commenced demolishing the "old Quaker schools houses"
pictured above. The over-topping wall &c (gable) at termination of the picture are parts of the auction store of Moses Thomas
& Sons -near but one house to the N.E. cor. of Fourth & Harmony St. [Note the northern school - house only was removed on
the site of which are now erected 3 noble stores 4 stories high, Aug. 27th 1859. CP.

Richards, Philadelphia painter, etcher, and photographer produced some of the earliest successful paper photographic prints
in the city, including photographs commissioned by local historian Charles Poulson to document Philadelphia.
