Dr. Ray Pierce, a Buffalo eclectic medical doctor, had from the late 1860s been manufacturing patent medicines, such as Dr. Pierce’s smart weed and pleasant pellets. He organized a dispensary of “medical gentlemen” in 1873 and in 1878 opened The Invalids' and Tourists' Hotel in Buffalo for the treatment of chronic diseases.
