Funeral Car, erected by Wm. H. Moore & Son (Undertakers, No. 181 Arch St. Pha.) Especially for the occasion of the funeral obsequies of the Late President of the United States, General Zachary Taylor, Philadelphia, July 30th, 1850.
View showing the horse-drawn catalfaque drawn by eight white horses and led by eight grooms displayed during the mourning ceremonies arranged by Philadelphia city councils for the 12th president who died July 9, 1850. Black draping, fringes, and a canopy surmounted by an eagle figure adorn the car. Black covers are draped over the horses. The grooms wear black suits and hats. The hats are adorned with white bands that fall down the length of the men's backs. Also contains a simple border with filigree at the cornices. The July 30th funeral obsequies included a military parade, a civic procession, and a memorial sermon given by Rev. Gardener's cottage or tenant house.
Architectural drawing of an exterior view of the two-story quaint residence. Contains a pitched and shingled roof, covered side porch, gabled windows, and ivy covering sections of the facade. Trees landscape the grounds and two girls are visible on one of the two paths to the dwelling., Probably published in J.C. Sidney's American cottage and villa architecture : a series of views and plans ... (New York: Appleton & Co., 1850). The book was to be issued in ten parts, monthly, beginning in July, 1850. Packing label depicting a variety of furniture sold by Henkels including a table, vanity, desk, sofa, and chairs. Geo. S. Harris & Sons cigar box labels and trimmings.
Trade cards depicting specimens for cigar box labels and trimmings of George S. Harris & Sons. Shows No. 2151 "City cousin," No. 2126 "Mirth and beauty," and No. 2155 "First mate.""City cousin," depicts a young woman reclining against a bale of hay in a field. Above this scene are toiletries, perfumes, and a book of "Happy hour poems" wrapped in a ribbon. "Mirth and beauty" depicts a waist-length portrait of a young girl wearing a large plumed hat. "First mate" shows a sailor in his blue uniform at sea, gripping his straw hat in his right hand, and telescope in his left., George S. George & James M. Bullock. "Conshohocken Woolen Mills" :
Exterior view of the woolen mills at Gulf Creek and the Schuylkill River in Conshohocken. Complex includes a main mill; engine house; boiler and dry house; dye house; scouring house; wool house; ware house; steaming houses; storehouse; mill; shoddy mill; engine house; boiler house; carpenter shop; lumber shed; office; gas house; gas holder; and coal and waste house. A flag adorns the property and stacks spew smoke. A fence surrounds the complex outside of which a man on horseback converses with two gentlemen, two ladies stroll, and a horse-drawn wagon is stopped. In the background, a farm and pastureland and neighboring mansion house are visible. The mill built in 1854, was purchased by wool manufacturer Benjamin Bullock in the 1860s, and in 1871 his sons George and James Bullock assumed operations. [George Mecke cabinet maker and upholsterer, No 355, North 2nd St. nearly opposite Tammany St. Philadelphia.]
Advertisement showing the four-story storefront, with decorative masonry, for "George Mecke's Northern Cabinet Ware-Rooms and Furniture Ware Rooms" on Second Street between Noble and Green streets (i.e., 500 block). At the ground floor, a couple enters one of the two entranceways of the building. Furniture, including a side table, chaise lounge, armoire, and rocker are visible at the entrances, display window, and within the store. A woman, in a shawl, and holding a parasol approaches the chairs displayed at the second entrance. She stands across from two clerks retrieving a chair from the cellar to be loaded onto a "G. Mecke No. 355" horse-drawn cart parked in the street. The cart already contains a chest of drawers. Additional cabinetry, including chairs and a bed frame, and a worker are seen in the upper floor windows. George W. Watson coach & harness maker. Philadelphia.
Advertisement containing views of the "Factory at 13th & Parrish Sts." and the factory and showroom, i.e., "Old Stand No. 9, Sth. Sixth St." Factory view shows the bustling "George S. Watson Coach Factory" complex with workshops, courtyard, and sheds surrounded by a wood fence on the 800 block of North 13th Street. Within the courtyard, wheelwrights work on a wheel propped up next to a blazing fire as another worker walks past with a watering can. Other workers retrieve planks of wood from piles loaded in a shed and attend to a carriage. Carriage parts, a horse in a single stall, and piles of wood surround the workers. Within the workshops, carriages and coaches and metalworkers at a forge are visible. A wagon maker also works on a few vehicles placed on a balcony attached to the upper floor of the main workshop. Outside of the complex, a worker rolls a wheel toward the entrance to the workshop with the forge as another leads two horses toward the entrance of the courtyard. A man carrying a stick with rags over his shoulder, near an ambling dog, also walks on the sidewalk. Also shows rows of buildings and a wagon crossing an empty lot in the background., "Old Stand" view shows the factory and show room, adorned with signage, on the 100 block of South Sixth Street. Through the two open entries, a clerk is visible showing a couple one of several carriages that line the showroom floor. Outside the building, in front of the display window, a gentleman gestures to a handler of two horses hitched to a coach in the street. Behind the gesturing man, a laborer enters the cellar of the showroom below the window that displays harnesses, horse equipment, and a small-model coach. Three unhitched carriages and coaches line the street in front of the adjoining building marked "Geo. W. Watson Coach & Harness Maker." Laborers work at a number of the windows at the upper floors of the two buildings. Partial views of adjacent businesses complete the view. One building contains an awning marked "Wind...RLIN." In the right of the image, a lady converses with a cricket player near a couple conversing with spectators behind the brickwall of the stand. Girard House Polka
Cover illustration is a lithograph, hand-colored, showing the Girard House hotel built 1851-1852 after the designs of John McArthur, Jr., at 823-835 Chestnut Street. The gold & silver artificers of Phila. In civic procession 22 Feb 1832.
Event lithograph showing the gold and silver artificers of Philadelphia on procession past the Second Bank of the United States (420 Chestnut) for the centennial celebration of the birth of George Washington. Government officials and prominent citizens led the parade order, followed by the tradesmen, then the volunteer fire companies, and lastly the military. Shows the craftsmen, all attired in top hats and sashes, led by a parade marshall on horse-back. He is followed by a six-horse mounted team pulling a float carrying men operating and protecting a coin press. Two other men, probably the marshall's aids, on horseback, one on a rearing horse, flank the rear of the vehicle. Several rows of marching artisans follow the float led by an artificer carrying a large banner adorned with a bust portrait of Washington. The portrait is encircled by a wreath and bordered by an eagle that clasps a banner in his beak reading "Pater Patriae" [design on distributed coin]. Along the parade route, throngs of spectators watch from the steps of the bank, along the street, and from the second floor windows of businesses adjacent to the financial institution. Signage for "Thomas Fletcher, Manufacturer of Silver Plate and Jewelry"; "Fletcher & Gardiner"; and "Browne & Robb 132" adorn the storefronts. Merchandise is displayed in the windows of Fletcher & Gardiner. Spectators along the street include well-attired men, women, and children, including several boys who run to and gather in front of the float to retrieve freshly pressed coins being thrown from the vehicle. Fire company certificate containing a large central vignette of fire fighters with fire fighting vehicles in front of the State House in Philadelphia surrounded by six smaller vignettes depicting the company's three fire stations (dating 1804, 1848, and 1860); fire fighters battling blazes at T. Morris Perot's drug store (located on 600 block of Market Street, burned December 3, 1868) and at a block of rowhouses; and fire engines. Different era company firemen in uniform stand to either side of the central scene. Good Will Fire Company of Philadelphia.
Fire company certificate containing vignettes depicting fire fighters extinguishing a blaze at the Union League of Philadelphia (burned September 7, 1866); the Good Will fire station; and a horse-drawn fire engine. Fire fighting equipment including a fire hat, a ladder, an axe, and other tools are drawn bundled together to form decorative elements on both sides. Tradecard containing a view of the three-and-one-half story beer hall and restaurant adorned with signage reading "G. Hartung Hotel." A patron enters the establishment as a man, probably the proprietor, stands near the entrance. A laborer emerges from the cellar holding a keg. Kegs and a case of liquor bottles line the sidewalk near a horse-drawn dray situated in the street for loading. Grand lodge room of the new Masonic Hall, Chestnut Street Philadelphia.
Commemorative print showing the ornately decorated grand lodge room on the second floor of the New Masonic Hall built 1853-1855 after the designs of Sloan & Stewart at 713-721 Chestnut Street. Rows of cushioned benches with carved backs line the room adorned with gold vaulting over the turquoise colored walls and ceiling. Two daises with lavish thrones adorned with ornate Gothic-style canopies containing sculpted allegorical female figures interrupt the seating. The larger dais, which predominates the background and over which a large gilt chandelier hangs, contains several Gothic-style chairs, two chests, and sculpture displayed on pedestals and in alcoves. The smaller dais, including a chest, stands in the right of the image.
