1776. Centennial Fountain, 1876. Fairmount Park, Philadelphia. Erected under the auspices of the Catholic Total Abstinence Union of America.
View showing the fountain designed in honor of prominent Irish or Catholic Revolutionary heroes that was erected 1875-1877 by the national temperance society at Fountain Avenue and Avenue of the Republic on the Centennial grounds. The monument designed in the shape of a maltese cross by Herman Kirn contains statues of Father Theobold Matthew (Irish temperance reformer), Charles Carroll (only Catholic signer of the Declaration), Commodore Barry (Irish-born naval commander known as the Father of the American Navy), and Archbishop Caroll (first Catholic Bishop of the U.S.) mounted on fountain pedestals. The statues surround the central sculpted figure of Moses who holds the Ten Commandments. The Moses sculpture rests upon a rock-mound within a marble basin. Water flows over the rocks into a pool. Also shows visitors, including a woman with a parasol, strolling around the memorial. Another drinks from a cup at the "Matthew" fountain. View includes trains of people arriving by foot, on horseback, and by omnibus in front of the exhibition hall. The length, width, and square footage of the building are printed below the image. Vignettes, predominately events from the American Revolution, War of 1812, Mexican American and Civil War, include "Drafting the Declaration of Independence - The Committee"; "Reading the Declaration of Independence"; Celebration of the Fourth of July After the [Civil] War"; "Battle at Manmouth"; "Entry into Mexico"; "Battle of Lake Erie"; the raising of the American flag at "Fort Sumter"; "Surrender of Lee"; and Lincoln's celebratory "Entry into Richmond." Amusing genre scene depicting three drunk men stumbling arm-in-arm down a city block in front of fenced, wooden scaffolding. The man on the left skips, raises his hat and supports the unconscious man in the middle, who wears a lady's bonnet on his head. The man on the right also supports the bonnet-wearing man while he clings his arm around a lamp post as he holds a long pipe. Playbills and advertisements adorn the wooden fence in front of the scaffolding. The postings promote the National Police Gazette, Wheatley's Arch Street Theatre, Walnut Street Theatre, John Drew's National Theatre, the Academy of Music, and steam boat Edwin Forrest of Trenton Capt. McMakin. His brothers Benjamin, Edward, and John were also artists, and for a short time in the 1840s, Richard shared a Philadelphia studio with Edward and John and taught art. Like his brothers, Benjamin and Edward, Richard served as a topographical draftsman on expeditions to the western United States. He was killed by Native Americans in Utah.

Advertises Kollner as a painter of portraits of "ladies and gentlemen on horseback" and "horses, correct and in every possition [sic]." Reflects Kollner's failed attempt to establish himself as an equestrian portrait painter upon his arrival in Philadelphia. Abbott & Lawrence. Liberty Stove Works, Brown Street above Fourth St. Philada.
Advertisement showing the stove works founded in 1851 on the 400 block of Brown Street in Northern Liberties. Works include a four-story building containing the "office" and adorned with a cupola, a large work yard, and a rear "Foundry." At the multi-story building, a laborer loads stoves that are lined on the sidewalk into a horse-drawn wagon under the eye of a man at the doorway. On the roof, two other men stand in the cupola that is adorned with a statue of Liberty. In the adjacent work yard, laborers shovel and pick at mounds of coal and bricks, and load and transport hand- and horse-drawn carts on the grounds and up a ramp leading to an opening in the foundry. Near the workers, a group of men, one leaning on a shovel convenes and two boys chase each other over a mound. On the sidewalk, men, women, and children pedestrians stroll past a street lamp, watch the workers, and converse near a dog sniffing a fire hydrant. In the street, drivers guide horse-drawn carts, a drayman travels, and a pedestrian crosses in the path of an "Abbott & Lawrence Liberty stove Works" wagon and speeding carriage occupied by a family of three. Street activity also includes a man on horse back, two dogs in a greeting stance, and two gentlemen engaged in conversation. Accident on the Camden and Amboy Railroad, near Burlington, N.J. Aug. 29th 1855. 21 persons killed, 75 wounded.
Disaster scene showing the carnage and melee following the collision between a Camden and Amboy mail and passenger train on route from Philadelphia to New York and a horse-drawn wagon of an elderly physician. In the background, rescue workers attend to the tangled wrecks of the derailed passenger cars. Some are smashed and lay in a ditch. The mail car remains upright and on the tracks. The horse pulling the wagon lays dead, his guts seeping out, in the left of the image. Onlookers gather on a debris-strewn hill near the overturned wagon and crash site. In the foreground, dozens of evacuated passengers and crash victims lie on the ground and assist the injured among debris and passengers' valises and personal effects. The crash occurred when the train reversed its direction to accommodate a south-bound train on the one-track system. Physician John T. Hannegan witnessed the initial passing of the railcars and assumed he had safe crossing. An accurate sketch from nature, of the exterior and interior of the house no. 39, Nth. Fourth St. Philadelphia, where the atrocious murder of Mrs. Rademacher was committed on the night of the 23d, March 1848, her wounds, and exact position when discovered
Sensational print containing two views of the murder scene of Catherine Rademacher, sister-in-law of lithographer Augustus Kollner. Her husband, Charles L. Rademacher kept a bookstore and medicinal shop on the first floor of the Fourth Street address, and his residence with the Kollner family on the second and third floors. On March 23, 1848, the Rademachers were awakened by an intruder searching their bedroom who beat Rademacher unconscious and slain his wife. A broken knife, resembling a shoemaker's tool, but not the only instrument used in the slaying, was found at the scene. A recently released inmate from Eastern State Penintentiary and German shoemaker, Charles Langfeldt was convicted, and executed on October 20, 1848 for the crime despite his declaration of innocence. Upper view shows the murderer, dressed in black, including a top hat, on the rear shed roof of the red brick residence and store. He approaches an upper floor window with a shutter half open. The lower windows of the building are shuttered and a partial view of a leafless vine climbing an arbor (neighbor's yard) is visible in the left of the image. Lower view shows the bedroom and scene of the crime. The murdered woman, attired in a night dress, lies on the floor, face up, with blood surrounding her upper body. The victim has cut marks on her face, chest, and arm., Her husband lies face down on the bed. His head is positioned near the foot of the mattress. Blood stains his shoulder and the pillows at the head of the bed. Blood splatter is also visible on the wall above and the knob of a door near a dresser in the left corner of the room. Other furniture includes a chair on one side and a night table with wash bowl and pitcher on the other side of the bed. Sheet music cover containing an exterior view of the Philadelphia-branch office situated next to Carpenter's Hall court at 116, i.e., 320 Chestnut Street. Signage listing the name and services of the company, and manager Edward S. Sanford, adorns the five-story building. Shows laborers loading an "Adams & Co" horse-drawn express wagon as in the street a dog runs between it and a departing "California Express" wagon hauling crates. A man holding a valise sits on the crates. Two men, including possibly Sanford, watch the scene from the building doorway. Pedestrians bear witness from the sidewalk. Company clerks are visible in the second floor windows of the building. Also contains partial views of the neighboring storefronts, including shadowy display windows of merchandise. Advertisement for the Philadelphia branch (est. circa 1843) of the rail express service company started by Alvin Adams of Boston in 1840. Shows a line of freight cars being pulled by a fireball and lightning across train tracks on a stone culvert in a wilderness setting. The cars are marked with the city and name of its recipients, including Boston & New York, Adams & Co.; Philada. & Baltimore, Adams & Co.; Baltimore, Washington & Richmond, Rogers & Co.; Baltimore & Wheeling, Green & Co. A creek with rocky banks flows through the culvert. Also includes an American eagle standing on a rocky ledge rising about the freight cars. Membership certificate for the society "established at Philadelphia for the advice and assistance of English men in distress" containing a view of Dover, England. Depicts men dragging a boat on to the coastline near the white cliffs, Dover castle, and piers. Ships sail on the turbulent waters. Also contains a blue ribbon adorned with the seal of the society. Tradecard showing the “South Street Grain Distillery,” formerly the Southwark Theatre (closed in 1817) and adjacent “Malt House” on the 400 block of South Street. A fenced courtyard separates the processing plants in front of which horse-drawn carts are lined. The vehicles, attended by drivers, arrive for and receive deliveries. Barrels line the sidewalk in front of the distillery and a laborer is visible at the third-floor receiving entrance of the building. Advertisement showing the busy industrial complex established circa 1819 by Alfred Jenks and enlarged in 1853 on the east side of Richmond Street between Franklin & Locust streets in Bridesburg. A horse-drawn flatbed truck enters the courtyard of the U-shaped complex containing several buildings that are surrounded by wood fencing. Within the yard, clusters of workers transport boxes and planks of wood by hand near an unhitched wagon surrounded by crates. A carriage with driver waits near a smaller building, landscaped with trees and attached to one of the large workshops. Alois Senefelder. Inventor of lithography
Book illustration containing a portrait of Senefelder in a slightly draped oval frame bordered by scenes, pictorial details and vignettes representative of the lithographic trade. Frame contains a plate marked "1800" to represent the year of the invention of lithography. Pictorial details of lithographer's tools including a pen, ink pot, etching needle, straight edge, compass, sponge, brush, palette, and ink roller flank the upper edges of the frame. Scenes of a lithographic printer rolling ink on a stone on a hand press (left) and a lithographic artist using a hand rest to draw a portrait on stone from a sketch at his drawing table (right) adorn the lower edges. Scenes also include stones stored in a library of shelves and resting against the hand press as well as the artist's portfolio laying against his drawing table. America Fire Engine Co. of the city of Philadelphia.
Fire company membership certificate containing two side panel views, vignettes, and firefighting iconography. The left panel shows firefighters running from the fire house on Buttonwood Street, below Third Street. Two men stand lookout on the tower above the house, as others pull the fire engine from the garage. The right panel shows the fire company attempting to extinguish the January 14, 1869 fire caused by an explosion of a steam boiler at the southeast corner of Ninth and Chestnut Streets. Flames shoot from the top of three adjacent businesses on land formerly occupied by the Burd Mansion including, Howell & Brothers, paper hanging (900 Chestnut Street); J.M. Hafleigh, dry goods (902 Chestnut Street); and J.F. & E.B. Orne, carpets & oil cloths (904 Chestnut Street). The center vignette, below the membership text, depicts a man standing in front of the two horses that are hitched to a carriage pulling the fire company's engine. At the top of the certificate, American and Pennsylvania flags flank the image of lady liberty sitting on the wing of an eagle. With a lightning bolt in her left hand, she floats above a banner that reads "Allways [sic] ready and willing to assist". Fire fighting equipment, including a helmet, engine, and bugles, are drawn as decorative elements interspersed with the side panel views. Advertisement showing the five-story hotel built by John L. Ridgway in 1844 at 181-183 (i.e., 517-519) Chestnut Street. Male and female guests sit under an awning on the front porch, enter the building, and stroll on the second floor balcony. Other patrons are visible, through the open windows and entrance, in the saloon and at the front desk. Curtains adorn several of the upper windows and rolled carpets are showcased in the display windows of the tenanting business of "J. & B. Orne." A couple approach the entrance of the adjacent storefront of "J. Sill & Co. Gloves. Hosiery. Cravats. Shirts. etc." at 185 (i.e., 521) Chestnut Street. Hosiery and bolts of fabric adorn the display windows of the building that also contains columns and a balcony. Armory of the First Troop Philadelphia City Calvary.
View of the first permanent First City Troop armory erected in 1863 at 21st and Ludlow streets below Market Street. Shows mounted members of the troop, including a bugler making a call, creating a formation on the street beside the building. Troop members on foot enter the building and walk on the sidewalk as two on mounts exit from the side of the armory. Also shows civilian spectators and pedestrians, including a gentleman tipping his hat to a couple of ladies. Armory was rebuilt in 1874.
