- Advertisement containing classical architectural elements and figures to promote the lithographic studio of the English-born artist Alfred Hoffy. Image includes the advertising text printed on a centrally-located monument adorned with column details. An eagle rests on the top of the stone piece. A woman in Roman garb holding a bird on her finger stands to the left and a boy in Roman garb clutching a bird to his chest stands to the right of the monument. Trees and a tree stump form the background to the figures. Hoffy operated from 88 Walnut Street 1844-1847. He was also a pomological enthusiast and the artist for and publisher of the first illustrated American journal devoted to fruit cultivation, the "Orchardist's Companion," published 1841-1842. - Advertisements for the late 19th-century Philadelphia lithographic firm, originally established as a blank book manufactory ca. 1874 by bookbinders and brothers John and August Hofstetter. Name of the establishment ornamented with pictorial details, including a landscape view, a book, and artist's brushes. Prints contain a sentimental and comic scene. Sentimental scene shows a peasant girl, accompanied by a dog, walking through the woods and knitting. Comic scene shows a gentleman, near a lake, inspecting his rear covered in paint in front of a bench adorned with the sign "Paint." Also includes the promotion "Color Work a Specialty." - Advertisement showing the three-story factory and showroom with large first floor entryway for the ornamental iron works business. Signage covers the building advertising “Cemetery Lots Enclosed. Hood & Noblitt City Iron Railing Manufactory & Ornamental Iron Works” and “Hood & Noblitt 121 Iron Railing Manufactory. Fire Proof Doors…in General." Railings and ornamental works, including chairs, tables, and benches, are visible outside and within the entrance that is flanked by matching dog sculptures on pedestals. - Horizontorium.
- Morphed view of the Gothic-style bank building, erected in 1808 after the designs of Benjamin Henry Latrobe at the southwest corner of Fourth and Chestnut streets. Shows the building projecting upward from the plane of the paper causing a cathedral like effect to the architecture. A gate, lawn, and trees surround the building. An outbuilding is visible on the property. Couples and a lady with a parasol stroll on the sidewalk. The Philadelphia Bank or Bank of Philadelphia (predecessor of the Philadelphia National Bank), formed in 1803, and was incorporated in 1804 as the unofficial bank of the commonwealth. The building was razed in 1836. Print is the only recognized American "Horizontorium" image and one of two known views of the bank., Given the publisher, Wainwright suggests that the probable printer was Childs & Inman., Manuscript note on recto: Fourth Street. - The horrible murder of the Dearing Family.
- News print showing the Philadelphia family murdered by their farmhand Anton Probst at their farm at Jones Lane in South Philadelphia on April 7, 1866. Probst, his face partially covered by the wall above the passageway, drags the body of one of the boys through it to the crib. The goateed murderer drags the boy by his feet, face up, from the pile of corpses laying on the hay covered floor. To the left of the image, Mrs. Dearing lays face down and covered by the bodies of her older children, who lay face up and with slit throats. Her hand is outstretched and resting on the baby, whose throat is also slit. To the right, in front of a barrel below a window, Mr. Dearing lays face up, a slit in his throat, his face covered by hay, and next to family friend Miss Dolan. She lays face down, her arms outstretched and her cross visible from beneath her body. Also shows, a pitchfork and ax propped against the wall in the background across from an opening to another section of the barn where cows stand in stalls. The murdered farmhand, Cary, is not depicted. Probst, a German immigrant and swindler, was a disgruntled former farmhand of the Dearings who murdered the family by hammer and ax for revenge and money. - Advertisement showing a view of the five-story, Norman-Italian style ornamented, cast-iron fronted building tenanted by the dry goods establishment that was completed in 1853 after the designs of Sloan & Stewart at 213, i.e., 513 Market Street. In front of the store, a gentleman departs from the entrance and a couple greets a gentleman across from another man leaning on a column of the building. A couple strolls past, and a group of men convene near crates on the sidewalk, in front of neighboring buildings on the block. In the street, a driver stands with his loaded horse-drawn dray. Image surrounded by an ornate border, including filigree; cherubic and female allegorical figures representing the mechanical arts, industry, and virtues; and medallions printed with the names of the contractors who worked on the structure. Contractors include Wm. Keay, granite; Bottom, Tiffany & Co., Iron Front, Trenton, N.J.; James Spencely, Plasterer; E.& P. Coleman, Bolts &c.; Wm. Butcher & Son, Tin Roofing; Geo. - Hotel Aubry, Walnut Street from 33rd to 34th Sts. Philadelphia.
- View showing the "dwelling house" hotel built on Walnut Street between 33rd and 34th streets for the Centennial Exhibition in 1876. Guests stand on the porch of the twenty-six house hotel and elegantly dressed men, women and children stroll the grounds in front of the hotel. The house number of each of the twenty-six properties, from 3300-3350, is labeled above the roof line. A Chestnut and Walnut Street streetcar filled with passengers travels east as horse-drawn carriages and coaches travel in both directions on Walnut Street. The hotel, built on inexpensive land considered undesirable for a permanent hotel, was composed of rows of several houses that were to be later sold or leased as individual dwellings. - H.S. Tarr monument, &c. marble mantle manufacturer.
- Advertisement containing an exterior view of the factory (adorned in signage) and fenced marble yard located at Green Street above 7th Street. In the yard, a couple reviews one of several cemetery monuments displayed in front of the factory in which marble workers are visible. The men toil near the open entry and windows. Several of the monuments, many obelisks, contain sculpted adornments. In the street, passengers arrive from an omnibus for the "Exchange & Norristown R.R. Depot. Peters Sixth Street Line" near laborers loading marble works onto a horse-drawn cart. - [Humane Engine Company hand-pump fire engine]
- View of the engine of the hose company instituted in 1794 that operated from Callowhill Street above Second Street. Engine contains double-decker end stroke pumper handles and panels illustrated with female figures, including a woman holding a sleeping child in her lap. A company volunteer, attired in his fire hat and uniform, holds a trumpet in one hand and rests his other on one of the pumper handles. - Humboldt Monument in Fairmount Park, designed by Collins & Autenrieth, for the Humboldt Festival Committee.
- View showing a rendering of the monument, surrounded by trees and bushes, to be erected in honor of German natural scientist Alexander von Humboldt in East Fairmount Park. Monument composed of a bust of Humboldt resting on a column pedestal adorned with lion-mouthed fountains and two cherubs holding a globe marked "Cosmos" (representing Humboldt's 5-volume work about his knowledge of the earth). A stone canopy with benches protects the monument under and near which a lady and two gentlemen stand. Also shows a short level of stairs leading to the monument. The cornerstone of the monument, commissioned by German societies, was laid facing the entrance to Girard Avenue Bridge during a celebration of the centennial of the birth of Humboldt on September 13, 1869. - In commemoration of the great parade of the Philadelphia Fire Department October 16th 1865
- Commemorative print containing a portrait of Chief Engineer David M. Lyle in uniform and three vignettes. Vignettes show an injured soldier being transported from an ambulance at the Citizens Volunteer Hospital; a horse drawn steam engine; and fire fighters battling a blaze with a steam engine. Also contains a list of over 100 regional fire companies who participated in the parade surrounded by a border designed as fire hoses extending from a fire hydrant. The 1865 parade was the greatest one in the history of the fire companies with near twenty thousand fireman processing nearly 20 miles from Broad Street. - In commemoration of the hundredth anniversary of American independence
- Elaborate Centennial Exhibition commemorative print depicting an arched monument containing a central full-length portrait of George Washington surrounded by vignettes; allegorical figures; and religious quotes by the first president. Washington is depicted mounted on his horse. Arch is adorned with the names of the 38 states and is flanked by columns containing views representing the industries of the North, East, South, and West. Views show a white man laborer of the North chopping a tree at a waterfront, white women loom workers of the East, an overseer on horseback watching an enslaved African American man picking cotton in the South, and a white man farmer reaping his harvest with a horse-drawn plow in the West. Columns also contain allegorical figures to represent the years 1776 and 1876. Justice and Independence (depicted as white women and holding the Declaration), and a prostrate British soldier represent the year 1776 and Peace and Liberty (depicted as white woman and holding a "Ballot"), and a seated enslaved African American man free from his shackles represent the year 1876. Monument also contains views of Independence Hall and Memorial Hall (Centennial Exhibition), the scene showing the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and allegorical figures and emblems symbolizing the classical and industrial arts. Other pictorial elements depict the all-seeing eye; American eagle, shield, and flag; vignettes showing Washington praying, and accepting the sword of surrender from Lord Cornwallis during the American Revolution; and vignette views with dimensions of Centennial Exhibition buildings.
