- Vignette illustrating a banknote for the Philadelphia National Bank. Shows the fabric store in Jayne’s Hall (constructed 1856) at 631 Chestnut Street. Members of the Lafourcade family worked as Philadelphia merchants from around 1840, with the partnership between the brothers and Irwin established around 1866. Pedestrians walk on the sidewalk past a horse-drawn dray parked in the street to be loaded. - Racist advertisement for Leadbeater & Co.’s stove polish depicting a white woman and an African American woman polishing stoves. In the left, the brown-haired white woman, attired in a blue ruffled dress, white gloves, a necklace, and bracelets, stands holding a bottle of Leadbeater’s stove polish in her left hand, which she brushes onto a heating stove. In the right, an African American woman domestic, attired in a yellow head kerchief, gold hoop earrings, a red collared shirt with the sleeves rolled to her elbows, and a green skirt with black stripes, kneels as she brushes polish on the cooking stove. She turns her head to see her reflection on the stove in the left. Also visible in the image are a framed portrait, landscape, and still life, and a green sideboard with white plates and a cup. - Lemon Hill Mansion
- Proof print containing four duplicate views showing the former mansion of businessman Henry Pratt built 1799-1800 in East Fairmount Park. Includes visitors walking on the grounds populated by trees with autumnal colored foliage. Lemon Hill, purchased by the city of Philadelphia in 1844, was the first Fairmount mansion obtained by the city to establish a public park, i.e., Fairmount Park. - Advertisement showing the adjoined three-and two-story manufactory buildings covered in signage for the polish and match business located on the 1000 block of Coates Street, i.e. Fairmount Avenue. Laborers, including one carrying a stack on his shoulder, are visible at a few windows and at an entrance. In the foreground, a gentleman walks, and a boy plays with a hoop near some crates and barrels, on the sidewalk. In the street, a drayman transports planks of wood, a "Fatman and Co.'s Matches & Blacking" wagon is parked, and a laborer loads crates on to a dray. - Lincoln Monument, Fairmount Park, Philadelphia
- View showing several park visitors surrounding the monument sculpted by Randolph Rogers that was erected in 1871 at East River (i.e, Kelly) and Lemon Hill drives. Visitors view the monument, converse, greet one another, read newspapers, sit on benches, and ride in carriages. Monument shows Abraham Lincoln, seated, with a quill in his hand after just signing the Emancipation Proclamation. The statue rests upon a pedestal adorned with sculpted garland, bronze eagles, and the City of Philadelphia’s Coat of Arms. The granite base is adorned with four panels inscribed with a dedication to and quotes from Lincoln of which two are visible. The monument was commissioned by the Lincoln Monument Association, one of the first such associations formed in the country, to raise funds for a city monument in memory of Lincoln. - Advertisement showing the red, two-bay, six-story building tenanted by Barclay and Isaac Lippincott's clothing store at the southwest corner of Fourth and Market Streets, marked with pre-consolidation addressed buildings. An advertisement painted in white on the east side of the building reads, "Lippincotts one price clothing warehouse cheap for cash." The same phrase is displayed on the front facade, along with the address, "4th & Market Sts., 130" A large flag reading, "Clothing Lippincott & Co.," flies at the top of the building. Two men stand near a display of shirts, pants, vests, and other articles of clothing under the corner awning. Patrons speak with sales clerks who stand behind counters, in front of shelves that extend to the ceiling. The store's wares cover the shop windows. A man walks with a woman holding a parasol near boxes piled outside of the adjacent, four-story property occupied by Lippincott's Clothing Warehouse (132 Market Street, ie. 402 Market Street). Next to the clothing warehouse, framed engravings are displayed in the partially visible shop window of Thomas, importer of engravings (404 Market Street). A large framed print is prominently advertised on the outside of the shop. A person stands in the front doorway of the building immediately south of Lippincott & Co. on Fourth Street. A woman in a red dress rides a white horse along Market Street, and two dogs stand together in the middle of the street in the foreground., The clothing store operated at this address as Lippincott, Taylor & Co., until 1851 when it became Lippincott & Co. under the ownership of Barclay and Isaac Lippincott. The named changed again in 1860 to Lippincott, Hunter & Scott, with an additional store at 424 Market Street. - Clever advertisement in the style of trompe l'oeil containing examples of the lithographer's work interlayered on top of a black background. Includes billheads, bills of laden, checks, maps and plans, marine and landscape views, portraiture, animal portraiture, sheet music, professional cards and advertisements. Some of the corners of the prints curl up. Pictorial elements of note include a portrait of Aloys Senefelder, the inventor of lithography; the business card of lithographic artist "A. Newsam"; advertising prints showing Duval's "Lithographic Establishment," and the Merchant's Exchange; and sheets of advertisement text in script promoting Duval's ability to "execute orders at short notice," his types of prints, and the advantages of the "facility" and "cheapness" of "facsimiles" for businesses. - Advertisement containing an ornamental border, vignette examples of Kollner's work, and several lines of advertising text for the collaboration between Camp and Kollner at the Phonenix Block circa 1849-1851. Vignettes, marked with variant Kollner imprints, include General Washington, accompanied by two of his officers, and dismounted from a horse that is managed by a black handler (Servant William Lee?); a line drawing of the Phoenix Block building; the back of an old man, possibly Franklin, dressed in colonial attire, and seated at his secretary; and a view showing a grand building, probably a Capitol, along a river on which vessels sail. - Advertisement showing the five-story storefront for the importer and dealer at 7 South Fourth Street between Market and Chestnut streets. A clerk greets a male patron at one of the open entryways. Shelves of plates, bowls, and pitchers line the walls of the store. In the display windows, more china, glass, and queensware, including tureens and pitchers are on view. On the sidewalk, clerks handle a large hamper lying between large marked barrels and a second large hamper. Marked barrels read "China Withers & Stowers Cynthiana. KY." and "F. - Locomotive steam engine of William Norris, Phila. Class B.
- Shows the steam locomotive "Washington" built by the company started by William Norris and Col. Stephen H. Long in 1836. Locomotive contains a nameplate. Also includes a scale printed below the image. In July 1836, the "George Washington" hauled a load of 19,200 pounds at 15 miles per hour up the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad's inclined Belmont Plane. It was the first locomotive to ascend a hill on its own power. In 1837, the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railway assumed ownership of the machine. - Exterior view of the coffee house and merchants' exchange at the southwest corner of Front and Market streets in Philadelphia during the colonial era. An auction of enslaved African American people occurs outside the coffee house and pedestrians traverse the sidewalks and street, including an African American woman carrying a basket on her head. Views of the adjacent printing house and book store of "Pennsylvania Journal" publisher, William Bradford, are visible. Erected in 1702 and established as a coffee house in 1754 by Bradford, the site was a public center for social and economic activities during the later 18th century, including auctions of enslaved people. - Allegorical genre scene showing an intemperate and temperate family in front of a tree on the banks of the Schuylkill River. In the left of the image, a man dressed in ragged clothing leads his somberly-dressed wife and barefoot sleepy child from a dilapidated tavern down a weed strewn path. At the tavern, men drink, cajole and are passed out on the porch underneath the tavern sign adorned with the image of a pig. Pigs laze and eat from a trough beside the drinking establishment. In the right of the image, a well-dressed couple watches their child pick flowers into a basket as others picnic on the grass in the background. In the distance, the Fairmount Waterworks is visible. - Advertisement showing the busy street corner at Front and Walnut streets near the Delaware River with a view of the building containing the oil manufactory, and the flour and farina store. The scene is depicted within a lithographed tromp l'oeil wood frame containing an inset of an exterior view of Peck's Works at Dock Street. Delivery wagons and drays traverse the business-lined streets, including one for Peck's driven by an African American man. Pedestrians walk the sidewalks and cross the intersection, and a white boy rolls a hoop past a white woman peddler sewing by her food stand. Visible in the background are the busy Walnut Street Ferry wharf and Smith and Windmill Islands in the Delaware River. Louis L. - Advertisement for the lithographic firm that operated 1853-ca. 1857 containing an allegorical scene. Shows the female figure lithography seated in an outdoor setting, a stone on her lap, and surrounded by tools for industrial arts, including an angle, mallet, and compass. In the background, a farmer plows his field and a ship sails on the water. Also contains corner piece vignettes showing the seal of Pennsylvania and the American eagle. A border depicted as a twig surrounds three-quarters of the scene. Names of the members of the firm are printed below the image: M. H. Traubel, Th. Leonhardt, Ed. Schnabel, and J. F. Finkelday. Also contains several lines of advertising text promoting the several types of lithographs "executed in a most Superior Style" by the firm, and the "Transferring from Steel or Copper, Wood Cuts, Stone and Manuscript," which is "particularly recommended" as "Millions of Impressions may be printed with but little wear to the Original Plate and at a far greater speed and a more moderate cost than from the Copperplate press." - Circular containing patriotic vignettes above paragraphs of advertising text in addition to bank note specimens for the lithographic studio that began operating at 409 Chestnut in 1858. Central vignette shows the figure of Liberty, one breast exposed, holding a shield and a liberty staff beside a fache and eagle. Surrounding vignettes show sailing vessels, the figure of Justice surrounded by symbols of patriotism and trade, and an allegorical scene with three women posed around an anchor with one, seated, and clinging to the legs of another who stands in a forceful stance. Specimens include female figures and the Traubel imprint. Figures depicted as a romanticized peasant woman, the figure of Justice, and a Native American princess, possibly Columbia. Businesses represented include Freed, Ward, & Freed, Commission Merchants, No. 811 Market Street and Bank of the Northern Liberties.
