Description
View looking east on Chestnut Street, south side, showing the government building at 420 Chestnut Street. Originally built as the Second Bank of the United States in 1824 after the designs of Philadelphia architect William Strickland, the building served as the U.S. Custom House from 1845 to 1935. Also shows adjacent buildings including the Philadelphia Bank Building (400-408 Chestnut, built 1836) and Healy & Co., glove manufacturers (4th and Chestnut). Several individuals sit and stand on the steps of the customhouse.
