Description
View looking west on Chestnut Street showing the government building at 420 Chestnut Street. Originally built as the Second Bank of the United States in 1824 after the designs of Philadelphia architect William Strickland, the building served as the U.S. Custom House from 1845 to 1935. Also includes the Philadelphia Bank Building at 400-408 Chestnut Street (built 1836). Several individuals sit and stand on the steps of the customhouse.
