Description
Shows throngs of people within a fenced enclosure crowded in front of a row of tents near an observatory tower, probably during a state meeting of the veteran's organization in Gettysburg. Also shows individuals seated in horse-drawn carriages outside of the fence on which a few men sit. The Grand Army of the Republic, a society of Union veterans was organized in 1866 to promote fraternity, charity, and loyalty among its members, including camp fires, encampments, the establishment of veteran relief funds, and the preservation of civil war sites and financing of memorials.
