Description
Exterior view of the school located at the northwest corner of Sassafras (i.e. Race) and Schuylkill Third (i.e. 20th) Streets. Founded in 1833, the school first occupied this building in October 1836. View includes pedestrians strolling in the street and a watchman's guardhouse.

Copyrighted by J.T. Bowen in 1840.
Originally issued as plate 12 in Views of Philadelphia, and Its Vicinity (Philadelphia: Published by J.C. Wild & J.B. Chevalier, Lithographers, 72 Dock Street, 1838). The lithographic stones for the views were acquired by John T. Bowen and reissued in 1838 and in 1848 with hand coloring.
