Book illustration of a view looking south showing the Fairmount Water Works and the Lancaster-Schuylkill Bridge. The water
works include the engine house and mill house originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer
Frederick Graff. The single span bridge, also known as the Upper Ferry Bridge, was erected 1809-1812 with Robert Mills serving
as architect, and Lewis Wernwag as engineer. The bridge burned 1838 and was replaced by the Wire Bridge at Fairmount (built
1841-1842).
