Description |
View showing the U.S. Naval Asylum, the convalescence home for retired sailors built 1827-1833 after the designs of William
Strickland at 2420 Gray’s Ferry Avenue. A small grove of trees adorns the yard in front of the colonnade portico entrance
of the three-story building known as Biddle Hall. Two men with canes talk in front of the stone and iron-work fence protecting
the property. Also shows, in the background, a sailboat on the Schuylkill River and the Blockley Almshouse, built 1833 in
West Philadephia, also after the designs of Strickland. The asylum also served 1839-1845 as the first naval school under the
administration of Commodore James Biddle.
