Description
View showing the first commercial oil well drilled in 1859 by Edwin Drake near Titusville, Pa. The pioneer well instigated the speculative oil boom of the 1860s. Shows the abandoned, dilapidated derrick and engine house adorned with a small sign inscribed, "Drake." The derrick and engine house, in disrepair by 1876, were dismantled and reassembled for display at the Centennial Exhibition of 1876 in Philadelphia.
