Description
View from the east bank of the Schuylkill River looking south showing the Wire Suspension Bridge. The bridge, the first suspension bridge in the United States, was built from 1841-1842 after the designs of engineer Charles Ellet, Jr. It was removed in 1874. Also shows factories and mills lining the east bank; horse-drawn wagons transporting materials across the bridge; and men in rowboats on the river in the foreground.
