The theater, originally built as a circus in 1809, was altered to a theater in 1816, and remodeled from 1827-1828 after the designs of Philadelphia architect John Haviland. Other renovations were completed in 1852 by Hoxie & Button, in 1903 by Willis Gaylord Hale and in 1904 by Rush Anderson Plowman.
