Designed by Samuel Blodget, Jr., the Federal-style building was completed in 1797 and housed the first Bank of the United States until revocation of the bank's charter by Congress in 1811. - Deathbed scene depicting Washington lying peacefully on a four poster bed, the curtains drawn, his head propped up on pillows, surrounded by his wife, grandchildren, a Quaker friend, the family physician (Dr. Craik), and a man and woman African American domestic. In the bedroom, dimly lit by candlelight from a nearby table, a somber Martha Washington, her grandson and granddaughter by her side, sits by Washington's bedside and holds his hand. On the opposite side of the bed, the physician checks for the President's pulse. The saddened Quaker and servants watch from the foot of the bed; the woman domestic kneels and cries. In the upper left corner above Washington's head, a hat and sword hang on the wall. National Wagon Works" factory and office at No. 1109 North Front Street. Vignettes depict: African American plantation workers transporting sugar cane to a barge by a "cane cart"; laborers and settlers hauling materials out West by "road wagon" and "catamaran"; an ambush of U.S. Army soldiers, baggage wagon, and ambulance by Native Americans; and a busy Philadelphia port scene with a disinterested constable overseeing the wharf congested with carts and wagons as docked Henry Simons's factory ships ready for departure. - Civil War souvenir print containing six views of the Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon at the southwest corner of Washington and Swanson Avenues and the Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon at 1009 Ostego Street. Contains a large central view of the exterior of the Union Saloon with troops arriving, entering the dining saloon, and departing on a Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad car as crowds of people flock around them. Established in 1881 as a normal school for Black teachers, the school relocated in 1882 to an abandoned plantation and evolved into a co-educational vocational school active within the local community. The institute trained students in academic and industrial subjects including farming, dairy work, masonry, sewing, nursing, bible studies, and agricultural science. Includes graphic details and vignettes depicting caricatured African Americans in a cancellation mark, stamp, and as postal workers. The cancellation mark (upper left) depicts the right, bust profile of a black man, possibly an allusion to a man in black face. The stamp (upper right) depicts the left, bust profile of a black man, possibly an allusion to a man in black face. In the lower left corner, an African American mail carrier, a mail bag around his shoulder, empties a "U.S.B.M." mailbox attached to a post. His back is to the viewer. In the lower right, an African American mail carrier, a mail bag filled with mail around his shoulder, and holding letters in his hand is depicted in mid stride. The unrelated Charles Dockstader and Lewis, i.e., Lew Dockstader (George Alfred Clapp) partnered in 1878. They joined John L Carncross' Minstrels in Philadelphia in 1880. The Dockstaders continued to perform with Carncross' until 1883 and the illness of Charles ending the partnership. In 1882, the men also performed with George Thatcher's Minstrel's (Philadelphia)and Haverly's Minstrels (St. Louis, Mo.). In the right above the crowd, "Mrs. Higby," wife of a New York clergyman, hands out pipes to the men (an allusion to Sickles's men being given pipes and Bibles for enlisting). The "enlisting" men wear torn, worn, and patched uniforms or street clothes and hold picket signs, guns, and clubs. Within the crowd, a pit bull terrier and a white boy watch the melee, which includes a white man, attired in a uniform and a "Colonel Sickles Brigade" cap, offering an African American man a medal, who scratches his head, next to another African American man, attired in uniform and portrayed in racist caricature, and seated on a barrel. A few years before the war in 1859, Sickles gained notoriety for murdering Philip Barton Key II for having an affair with his wife Teresa Bagioli. - Lantern slide with three sequential scenes from Harriet Beecher Stowe’s "Uncle Tom’s Cabin." Depicts scenes from chapters 26, 40, and 41. Chapter 26 image shows the deathbed scene of Eva St. Clair. Shows Eva in bed, seated up, holding a bouquet of flowers in her lap, and surrounded by people. Eva's parents Mr. and Mrs. St. Clare sit on either side of the bed and Miss Ophelia kneels and cries behind Mr. St. Clare. Mrs. St. Clare holds a fan, has a handkerchief in her lap, and looks toward Eva. Mr. St. Claire, rests his head in one hand, and has his other hand on the bed. In front of Eva, the enslaved men and women of the household, including Tom, kneel, stand, pray, hold handkerchiefs, and cry. The setting also includes a window with open drapes, a curtain behind Eva's bed, and a side table adorned with a vase of flowers. Chapter 40 scene represents the beating of Tom by his enslaver Simon Legree following the escape of the enslaved Cassy and Emmeline. Shows Tom, with grey hair, a grey beard, and barefooted, lying on a pile of cotton on the floor of a shed. Legree stands over him with one hand clenched in a fist toward his chest and the other clenched by his side as he raises up one of his feet. Chapter 41 scene shows an adult George Shelby visiting with the beaten and dying Tom after locating him in order to see if he "couldn't buy him back." Shows Tom lying on a pile of cotton near the opening to a shed. An open book lies near him by his hand. Shelby leans over Tom and holds his hand. - Portrait photograph showing the newly appointed United States Ambassador to Japan Roland S. Morris with Japanese and American guests at a luncheon before his trip to Japan at the Hotel Astor in New York on September 20, 1917. The seven men sit and stand outside in front of stones, shrubs, and flowers. Seated in the front are Japanese Consul General Yudo, Ambassador Roland Morris, and Hamilton Holt. Standing in a row behind them are Alcan Hirsch, Toyokichi Iyenaga, Sidney Gulick, and Jōkichi Takamine. Roland S. Morris (1874-1945) founded the Philadelphia-based law firm Duane Morris and served as the Ambassador to Japan from 1917 to 1920., Title and date from label on verso., Photographer's imprint stamped on verso mostly covered by label pasted on top of it. Morris, recently appointed Ambassador to Japan, was tendered a farewell luncheon by prominent Japanese and friends at the Hotel Astor, New York City on the eve of his departure for his new post. In the group are from left to right (sitting) Consul General Yudo, Mr. Roland S. Morris, and Mr. Hamilton Holt, (standing) Dr. Alcon(sic) Hirsch, Dr. Iyenaga and Mr. Tokonino (sic). Ambassador Morris succeeds the late George W. Guthrie who died at his post. His body was brought back to America on a Japanese warship. Ambassador Morris is a distinguished Philadelphia lawyer.

- Title from item., Date from copyright statement: Copyrighted 1887 by Day & Frick., Racist metamorphic trade card showing a caricaturized Chinese man laundry worker washing a sheet on a wash board in a washtub. Includes a tab that when pulled lifts the washer's arms up and down to reveal the text "Day Soap" on the wash board. The man wears his hair in a queue and is attired in a long-sleeved, blue collared shirt with buttons down the front, blue pants, and slip-on, cloth shoes. He smiles and looks to the right. The tub rests on a table beside a bar of soap, labeled “Day’s Soap.” On the ground behind the table is a basket of laundry. Sheets hang on a drying line. In the background, the wall has Chinese-stylized decorations including a gold wallpaper depicting birds and fish and a purple and gold wall hanging that reads, “Day’s Soap.” Peter Day founded the Day & Frick soap manufactory firm in 1886. He retired as president of the firm in 1917., Purchased with funds from the Walter J. Miller Trust for the Visual Culture Program., RVCDC, John D. Avil founded the Avil Printing Company (also known as John D. Avil & Co.) in West Philadelphia and managed it from the early 1860s until his death in 1918.
