Title: Plan for the permanent improvement of Independence Square Designed by George F. Gordon
Description: Circular illustration showing an oblique elevation looking southwest at Independence Square, situated between Fifth and Sixth Streets, and Chestnut and Walnut Streets, modified with George F. Gordon's proposed changes. Includes old City Hall built 1790-1791 after the designs of David Evans, Jr. (500 Chestnut); Independence Hall, built 1732-1748 after designs by Andrew Hamilton and Edmund Woolley (520 Chestnut Street); and Congress Hall built 1787-1789 (540-558 Chestnut). Eight equidistant walkways, "to be thirty feet wide, to be laid with variegated tile," radiate from the center to the corners of the square and are connected by a circular walk. Also shows the unexecuted Independence Monument (center), slated to be erected by the Thirteen Original States. Two fountains near Walnut Street demonstrate the creator's desire to beautify the square with "fountains, vases, statuary, and flower beds of all varieties"; and bronze statues on pedestals of the fifty-six signers of "The Declaration of Independence" lining the periphery of the square, which on three sides is completely open and accessible to pedestrians via granite steps. Statues of George Washington, William Penn, a group of Native Americans, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Daniel Webster, and Henry Clay would face Chestnut Street near Independence Hall., Contains passages of explicative text printed on verso. Text describes how to achieve this plan for the square. The old brick wall surrounding the square would be removed, along with the court house on Sixth Street, and the building occuppied by the Philosophical Society on Fifth Street. Title: Life in Philadelphia Collection
Description: Collection of primarily racist social caricatures lampooning the etiquette and conventions of early 19th-century, middle-class Philadelphians, particularly the growing community of free African American persons. Eliciting the heightened racism in the antebellum North, the African American men, women, and children characters are depicted with exaggerated features, wearing boldly-patterned and colored clothes, and speaking in a vernacular to be portrayed and denigrated as illegitimate elite society. Caricatures address courtship, consumerism, society balls, fashion, freemasonry, and the election of Andrew Jackson. Some caricatures also represent the sexism of the era. Originally published in Philadelphia as a set of fourteen prints; the first eleven were issued in 1828 and 1829 by William Simpson, a proprietor of a "fancy store." Sarah Hart and Son, stationers, published plates 12 and 13 in 1829. The last plate was issued by Sarah Hart alone in 1830. Probably in 1830 Sarah Hart reprinted the entire series. Additional African American caricatures by Clay, "Sketches of Character. At Home. Abroad," "The Dead Cut," "Back to Back," and "Philadelphia Fashions" published between 1829 and 1837 have generally been accepted and are identified as a part of the series., LCP holds entire series. Title: Footpath to Strawberry Mansion
Description: Photographer's imprint printed on mount., Photographer's blindstamp on mount., Depicts a dirt footpath in East Fairmount Park, leading to Strawberry Mansion., Strawberry Mansion, also known as Summerville, was commissioned by Judge William Lewis, in 1789. In the 1820s Joseph Hemphill bought the property and added two wings to the house. His son Coleman grew strawberries from roots imported from Chile, giving the property its popular name, Strawberry Mansion. The house became a picnicking spot and restaurant in 1835. The Fairmount Park Commission bought the property in 1868.
