Description Photograph showing a man standing beneath a large, leafless Florida Cypress tree at Bartram's Garden. Fallen leaves cover the ground and other slender trees surround the large center tree. Bartram’s Gardens, founded by American botanist John Bartram, is the oldest surviving botanic garden in North America. Built in 1728, the gardens cover forty-six acres with a focus in North American plants. The Gardens became a Philadelphia city park in 1891.
