Description Glass negative showing a forest at Bartram's Garden, with a particularly large Florida cypress tree in the center of the frame. A man stands in front of the tree, dwarfed by its height and circumference. Bartram’s Gardens, founded by American botanist John Bartram, is the oldest surviving botanic garden in North America. Built in 1728, the gardens cover forty-six acres with a focus in North American plants. The Gardens became a Philadelphia city park in 1891.
