The Chew mansion, Germantown [graphic] : Battle of Germantown fought October 4th 1777. Lieutt. Col. Musgrave threw himself with six companies of the 49th British regt. into Chew's house, which stood full in front of the main body of the Americans. Gen'l Reed was for pushing on immediately, this was opposed by Genl. Knox as against all military rule to leave an enemy in a fort in his rear, thus in attempting to induce the surrender of Lieut. Col. Musgrave, the precious moments were lost and gave Generals Gray, Grant and Agnew time to come up with a reinforcement. / Photograph taken in the Summer of 1856 by James E. McClees.
