Arcadia caption text: Many structures on the eastern side of Center City, near the Delaware River, were originally constructed
as residences and later adapted for commercial use. This photograph, taken in May of 1859, depicts the former mansion of wool
merchant Benjamin Bullock on Third Street [above] Market Street. Modified with display windows at street level, two businesses
- James L. Rahn’s hosiery and glove shop, and John M. Ford’s saddlery and hardware store - occupy the building. Other homes
on this block had already been replaced by taller commercial buildings.
