Description
Racist trade card illustration depicting an elderly African American man looking out of a window. The gray-haired man is attired in a red long-sleeved shirt and gold-rimmed spectacles. He holds a newspaper in both hands and a pipe in his left hand. The man looks toward the right side of the image and his mouth is agape. He is depicted with exaggerated features. S.H Zahm & Co. was owned by Samuel Hensel Zahm and his business partner Samuel Auxer. Zahm was an active member of the Lancaster community and was a member of the board of health, the Lancaster County Historical Society, and the Pennsylvania German Society. He was also a collector of Native American artifacts.
