Description
Bust-length portrait of the African American abolitionist and orator. Douglass, with white hair and a mustache and attired in a white collared shirt, a black bowtie, and a dark-colored waistcoat and jacket, faces slightly right while his eyes look to the left.

Biographical / historical note
New York photographers Napoleon Sarony and Jeremiah Gurney & Son, two of a small number specializing in celebrity portraits, produced a majority of such portraiture in the 1860s and 1870s.
