View looking west across the Schuylkill River from the old mill house at the Fairmount Water Works. Shows the dam as well
as construction materials and equipment near the new mill house. The new mill house, built between 1859 and 1862 after the
designs of Philadelphia engineer Henry P.M. Birkinbine, was altered between 1867 and 1872 during remodeling of the old mill
house. The waterworks, originally built between 1812 and 1822, were altered and expanded after the designs of Birkinbine and
Frederick Graff, Jr., until 1872.
