Description
Half-length portrait of the Tennessee journalist, itinerant preacher, and politician. Brownlow, attired in a white collared shirt, a black bowtie, waistcoat, and jacket, grasps his lapel with his left hand. Brownlow, although an advocate of slavery, actively opposed Southern secession and was subsequently exiled from the Confederacy during the Civil War.
