Arcadia caption text: Philadelphia’s numerous blocks of brick rowhouses are the most striking characteristic of the city’s residential architecture. The great local abundance of high quality clay and lime used to make mortar contributed to the prevalence of this style. Photographed at the close of the 19th century, this image captures a row of 18th-century residences on the north side of the 200 block of Locust Street.
