Description Depicts a row of old dwellings and businesses along the north side of Locust Street, near Second Street, including a grocer (left) and L. Bernhardt, tailor, at 241. Includes the back of a delivery wagon, a partial view of a carriage (right) and a single pedestrian passing a row of barrels on the sidewalk.

Arcadia caption text: Philadelphia’s numerous blocks of brick rowhouses are the most striking characteristic of the city’s residential architecture. The great local abundance of high quality clay and lime  used to make mortar  contributed to the prevalence of this style. Photographed at the close of the 19th century, this image captures a row of 18th-century residences on the north side of the 200 block of Locust Street.
