Description
Membership certificate for the German-American choral society founded in 1852. Includes an ornamental border and vignettes. Vignettes depict a Grecian-attired female with harp; an American eagle grasping a harp and a banner marked with the establishment date of the society; the female allegorical figure of music holding a harp, laurel wreath, and attended by a cherub displaying a sheet of music on a pillow; and a view of the society's hall at the N.W. corner of Sixth and Vine streets. By the mid 1870s, German-Americans had formed 24 singing societies in Philadelphia.
