Description
View of the rear of one of two factories owned by Cornelius & Baker, manufacturers of lamps, chandeliers and gas fixtures. Located on Cherry Street between 8th and 9th Streets, construction of the two wings of the U-shaped, multi-storied factory was completed in 1858. Building also contains a tower. In the courtyard, a driver leads a horse-drawn wagon past a few workers and two gentlemen in conversation. Cornelius & Baker was founded in 1835 and operated 2 factories and a storefront by the 1850s. The firm was succeeded by Cornelius & Sons in 1869.
View showing one of the two factories operated by the lamp, chandelier, and gas fixture factory. The multi-storied factory, marked "Cornelius & Baker," extends down most of a city block and contains a cupola adorned with a weather vane and a smaller adjoining building. Also shows street traffic, including a horse-drawn carriage and omnibus. A couple also strolls on the sidewalk. Cornelius & Baker was founded in 1835 and operated 2 factories and a storefront by the 1850s. The firm was succeeded by Cornelius & Sons in 1869.
