Description
View from the Fairmount Water Works showing the decorative distribution arch on Reservoir Hill. The arch, built in 1860, functioned as a standpipe and observatory tower. Also shows an inclined walkway to Reservoir Hill in the background. Construction materials, including rope, stone, and balusters, are visible in the foreground. The waterworks, originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Frederick Graff, were altered and expanded until 1872.
