Description |
Lithographic facsimile of plate nine from William Birch's "Views of Philadelphia" showing a street scene with a view of the
First Presbyterian Church on Market Street below Third Street. Depicts pedestrians, predominately women, traversing the sidewalk
before the church and adjacent buildings; a horse-drawn dray and cart traveling the street; and a woman peddler with her basket
of goods near the High Street market shed. First Presbyterian, rebuilt from 1793 to 1794 after the designs of John Trumbull,
was the first building in the city with a classic temple facade. The building was razed following the relocation of the congregation.
