Description
Engraving illustrates an episode from Chapter 7, "The Mother's Struggle." With her young son, Harry, in her arms, Eliza crosses the frozen Ohio River in search of freedom. In the background at the left, the slave-trader from whom she has fled stands on the river's edge. Next to him, two slaves lift their hands in a gesture of rejoicing.
