Description Glass negative showing the Bartram House, a two-story stone house with shallow steps surrounded by foliage. Bartram’s Gardens, founded by American botanist John Bartram, is the oldest surviving botanic garden in North America. Built in 1728, the gardens cover forty-six acres with a focus in North American plants. The Gardens became a Philadelphia city park in 1891. Bartram’s stone house was originally built 1728-1731.
