Physical Description
1 photograph: glass negative; 4 x 5 in.
Description
Glass negative showing a group of people on the beach at Asbury Park, N.J. Some swim in the water, others rest in the sand, and others stand on the pier extending over the ocean to the left. Many of the people wear bathing costumes. Asbury Park was developed in 1871 as a residential resort by James A. Bradley (1830-1921), a New York brush manufacturer. The town was named for Francis Asbury (1745-1816), the first American bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church. It was once home to the famous indoor amusement park Palace Amusements, the site of the original Tillie mural depicting two grinning faces.
