Description Glass negative showing a view of the Friends' Library, a large stone building at 5418 Germantown Avenue. A fenced in field in front of the library contains trees and a few small gravestones. A cobblestone road runs to the right of the library and two men stand on the sidewalk next to the fenced field. The Friends Free Library was originally housed in the Germantown Friends School, starting in 1845. In 1874, a separate library building was built, endowed by Alfred Cope. The Friends Free Library was an independent organization until 1977 when it was taken over by the school.
