Description
Racist trade card illustration depicting an African American man and boy walking through a valley alongside a river. The man is attired in a hat, a jacket with patches, and pants with a patch on the right knee. The boy is attired in a shirt and pants that are torn at the hems. The man carries a stick with a sack at the end over his left shoulder and holds a walking stick in his right hand. The boy holds a sack in his left hand. Mountains and a shrub are visible in the background. Both figures are portrayed with exaggerated features. Elizabeth Schoeneck was a grocer who immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1851.
