Description |
View showing the sheltered sculpture, "Old Mortality," completed by sculptor James Thom circa 1836 in the central courtyard
of the cemetery at 3822 Ridge Avenue. The sculpture, inspired by Sir Walter Scott's novel "Old Mortality," depicts Scott conversing
with the main character of his novel, an elderly itinerant Scotsman who re-carved names on gravestones, seated on a tombstone
near his horse. Laurel Hill Cemetery was built 1836-1839 after the designs of John Notman.
