Description |
Trade card promoting the Elkhart Paper Pail Company and depicting a racist caricature of an African American man minstrel.
The man is attired in a uniform-like costume of a black top hat with a gold band; a blue jacket with gold buttons and epaulettes
and a black belt; white pants; white gloves; and black knee-length boots. He pulls on a red cord for a curtain with his right
hand. He carries a pail labeled "Elkhart Paper Pail" in his left hand. The Elkhart Paper Pail Company was founded circa 1883.
The factory was damaged by fire in 1886 and 1887. The company rebuilt the manufactory and continued operating into the 20th
century.
