Description
Print containing a central view of the proposed Main Exhibition Building surrounded by titled vignettes showing key events in the history of the United States. View includes trains of people arriving by foot, on horseback, and by omnibus in front of the exhibition hall. The length, width, and square footage of the building are printed below the image. Vignettes, predominately events from the American Revolution, War of 1812, Mexican American and Civil War, include "Drafting the Declaration of Independence - The Committee"; "Reading the Declaration of Independence"; Celebration of the Fourth of July After the [Civil] War"; "Battle at Manmouth"; "Entry into Mexico"; "Battle of Lake Erie"; the raising of the American flag at "Fort Sumter"; "Surrender of Lee"; and Lincoln's celebratory "Entry into Richmond." Many of the images include victorious military leaders in addition to celebratory crowds. Other vignette views show street and pedestrian traffic in front of "Independence Hall or State House, Phila." and "The Memorial Building or "Art Gallery," Phila." Also contains the figure of America; an American eagle; a bee hive icon for "Agriculture" and train icon for "Mechanics"; Native American figures incorporated into the border; and banners reading "Great World Fair" and "Industry of All Nations." The fair celebrated the centennial of the United States through an international exhibition of industry, agriculture, and art in West Farimount Park.
