Description |
Racist, satiric trade card depicting an African American man, portrayed in racist caricature and attired in a straw hat, a
white collared shirt, pants with patches at the knee, and old shoes, sleeping with his back resting against a haystack in
a field. A rifle is propped on the haystack beside him. An African American angel with wings flies toward the sleeping man
with a pair of boots in his outstretched right hand. In the background is a scarecrow. Text printed on the recto describing
the scene is written in the vernacular. Burns & Zeigler succeeded the firm of Geo. S. Clogg & Son in 1875.
