Arcadia caption text: This 1860 view of the organ loft and altar, without a pulpit, at the east end of St. Peter’s Church
exemplifies the Episcopal church’s unique design. With the placement of the pulpit at the west end, parishioners would need
to alternately face each side of the church during services. Built 1758-1761 after the designs of Philadelphia architect Robert
Smith, the church, at 300-340 Pine Street, was formed from an overflow of congregants who worshiped at Christ Church. The
third organ loft constructed for the space, and installed in 1855, obscures the stained glass windows, installed in the 1840s.
